Most of Crawley was built out from the late 1940s onwards under the New Towns Act, and the bulk of the housing went up through the 1950s and 60s. That means the original pipework in a lot of these homes is now sixty or seventy years old — well past the point where it fails without much warning. We regularly find sections of original copper behind boxing and under floors, old back-boiler pipework left capped and forgotten when the heating was modernised, and bathrooms still the size they were designed at, which is small. None of that is a problem if you plan for it. It becomes a problem when someone quotes a job without looking properly first, which is why we'd rather come and see it.
The newer estates are a different job entirely — plastic push-fit pipework, pressurised systems, and layouts designed to be got at. The plumbing itself is usually straightforward, but newer homes throw up their own issues: a shower tray that isn't quite level, a trap that was never properly seated, an outside tap fitted with no frost protection that splits in its first winter. We check the things that get missed when a house is handed over in a hurry, not just the job we were called out for.
